Ben Lucas New Entrant 2026

Finding a Future in Forestry

A Growing Interest in Forestry.

Ben first became interested in forestry while studying at university, where a project exploring the distribution of broadleaf and conifer trees in County Durham opened his eyes to the industry’s importance and history. The more he learned, the more he wanted to build a career in the sector.

After graduating, Ben knew forestry was where he wanted to be, but breaking into the industry without experience proved challenging. Determined to gain practical skills, he joined a residential conservation programme with the RSPB, while continuing to apply for forestry-related roles.

Taking a Chance

At the same time as the new entrants chance came up Ben was training for running the length of Britain for charity in memory of his grandparents. Balancing training, applications and career ambitions wasn’t easy, but he remained focused on finding a route into forestry.

While searching for opportunities on LinkedIn, he came across the FTSUK New Entrants Programme and immediately applied.

Building Confidence

Ben quickly found value in the programme, gaining a better understanding of the forestry sector and the different career paths available.

“Phase 1 of the New Entrants course contained significant breadth which allowed me to understand the many routes into forestry. Having the FTSUK whilst applying to position’s sparked interest in the interviewer and gave me lots to talk about.”

The experience also gave him something he had been searching for: direct forestry experience and greater confidence when speaking to employers.

Success!

Between Phase 1 and Phase 2 Ben started applying for jobs and was successful in securing a role as a tree surveyor. Although taking up employment means he was unable to continue into Phase 2 of the programme, he remains grateful for the opportunity and the people he met along the way.

“Overall, it gave me that first piece of direct forestry experience which I will forever be grateful for.”

Ben is continuing to build his experience in the sector and is considering studying for an MSc in Forestry as he develops his long-term career plans. His journey shows how determination, practical experience and the right opportunity can help open the door to a career in forestry.
